If you are building a private label brand, custom packaging is not optional — it is one of the strongest tools you have. A well-designed box communicates quality, protects the product in transit and makes your brand memorable. This guide walks through what is possible and what to prepare.

1. Choose the packaging type

The main options for small electrical and home products are:

  • Color box (folding carton) — the most common choice. Printed on all sides, flat-packed, low shipping cost.
  • Brown box with label — cheaper, suited for B2B or Amazon FBA bulk shipments.
  • Blister card — good for retail hanging display, common for small accessories.
  • Gift box — rigid, premium feel. Ideal for high-end products and seasonal gifting.

2. Prepare your artwork

You will need a print-ready file — usually AI, PDF or PSD with 300 dpi resolution. A complete design typically includes:

  • Front: product image, brand logo, main selling point
  • Back: features, specifications, certifications (CE, RoHS, FCC etc.)
  • Sides: model number, barcode, country of origin
  • Bottom: manufacturer info, batch number

If you do not have a designer, most factories — including us — provide free artwork layout once you supply the logo and text.

3. Choose printing and finish

  • CMYK offset printing — standard and cost-effective for large runs.
  • Spot color / Pantone — for a specific brand color that must match exactly.
  • Matte lamination — soft, premium look. Popular in Europe.
  • Gloss lamination — brighter colors, more visible in retail.
  • Spot UV, foil stamping, embossing — high-end finishes for premium SKUs.

4. Add the compliance information

Custom packaging is also a legal requirement for most markets. Make sure the box includes:

  • Certification marks (CE, RoHS, FCC, ETL, UKCA)
  • Product name and model number
  • Voltage and power rating
  • Manufacturer name and address
  • Country of origin
  • Barcode (UPC or EAN) for retail
  • Warning labels where required

5. Understand the cost and MOQ

Custom packaging raises both MOQ and unit cost, but usually not as much as people expect. On average:

  • Standard brown box: no extra cost, no extra MOQ
  • Custom printed color box: MOQ typically 1,000–2,000 pcs
  • Premium rigid gift box: MOQ 2,000–3,000 pcs

Once the artwork is confirmed, the printing plate is made once. Reorders with the same design do not pay the setup again.

6. Check the sample before mass production

Always request a printed sample before the full run. Check:

  • Color accuracy — does the brand color look right?
  • Print clarity — any blur, misalignment or cutting issues?
  • Structure — does the box hold the product securely?
  • Compliance — are all required marks and text present?

7. Plan for shipping and storage

If you ship to Amazon FBA, the box must meet FBA requirements: 6-sided barcode, suffocation warning for bags, and FNSKU labels on each unit. We can prepare FBA-ready cartons on request.
