Humidifiers are a year-round seller in many markets, with peaks in winter and allergy season. But different regions have very different preferences. Here is how to choose the right model for your market.

1. Ultrasonic vs evaporative

  • Ultrasonic — quiet, cool mist, visible vapour. The most popular type for home use.
  • Evaporative — self-regulating, no white dust, good for hard water areas. Higher price.
  • Steam — warm mist, less common. Suited for small rooms and nurseries.

For most markets, ultrasonic is the best seller — quiet, affordable and visually satisfying.

2. Tank size

  • 1–2 L — small bedrooms, desks, travel. Lower price point.
  • 3–4 L — standard home use. The most popular size.
  • 5–6 L — large rooms, offices, families. Higher price but stronger margin.

In the US, 4–6 L is the sweet spot. In Europe, 2–4 L is more common due to smaller homes.

3. Mist output

  • 200–250 ml/h — small rooms up to 20 m²
  • 300–400 ml/h — medium rooms 20–40 m²
  • 500 ml/h+ — large rooms or open-plan spaces

4. Noise level

For bedrooms and baby rooms, noise matters. Look for:

  • Under 35 dB — very quiet
  • 35–45 dB — normal operation
  • Over 45 dB — noticeable, not recommended for sleeping

5. Features that sell

  • Night light — 7-colour LED is popular for nurseries
  • Auto shut-off — required for safety in most markets
  • 360° mist nozzle — directional control
  • Timer — 1/2/4/8 hours
  • Remote control — higher price tier
  • Essential oil tray — popular in the US for aromatherapy

  • Germany — evaporative preferred, low noise, energy efficiency, CE and GS
  • UK — mid-size tanks, night light, UKCA certification
  • Middle East — high mist output, large tanks, cool mist
  • Japan — compact, quiet, PSE certification
