Private label is one of the fastest ways to build a profitable home products business. Instead of competing on price with generic sellers, you create your own brand and control the margin. Here is how to do it.
1. Choose the right product to start with
Not every product works well for private label. The best starting products have:
- Steady demand — search volume that does not depend on a single season
- Reasonable MOQ — 500–1,000 pcs, not 10,000
- Clear differentiation potential — colour, size, function or packaging
- Certification-friendly — CE, RoHS, FCC already available
Good starting categories: mosquito killers, humidifiers, LED strip lights, storage boxes and pet supplies.
2. Find a supplier that supports private label
Not every factory offers OEM or ODM. Ask these questions:
- Can you print my logo on the product and packaging?
- What is the MOQ for custom packaging?
- Do you provide free artwork design?
- Can I customize the colour, size or function?
- Can you provide a printed sample before mass production?
We support full OEM / ODM for all product lines, including free artwork layout for confirmed orders.
3. Design your brand identity
You do not need a full branding agency. Start with:
- Brand name — short, easy to pronounce, check trademark availability
- Logo — simple, works at small and large sizes
- Colour palette — 2 main colours max
- Font — one clean sans-serif font for everything
Tools like Canva or Looka can help you create a basic brand kit in a day.
4. Design packaging that sells
Packaging is your strongest marketing tool in retail and on Amazon. Key elements:
- Clear product image on the front
- Main selling point in large text
- Certifications displayed prominently
- Barcode and FNSKU (for Amazon)
- Compliance info on the back — voltage, model, manufacturer
Custom color box MOQ is typically 1,000–2,000 pcs. Once the plate is made, reorders are cheaper.
5. Price for profit, not for the lowest price
A simple formula for private label pricing:
- Landed cost = unit price + freight + duties
- Target retail price = landed cost x 3 to 5
- Amazon fees (referral + FBA) typically 30–40% of retail
- Net margin target: 20–30% after all costs
Do not compete on price alone — compete on branding, packaging and customer experience.
6. Launch and test
- Start with a small order — 500–1,000 pcs
- List on Amazon, Shopify or your own website
- Use Amazon PPC or Google Ads to drive first sales
- Collect reviews and feedback in the first 30 days
- Reorder best-sellers, drop slow movers
7. Scale what works
Once a product is profitable, you can:
- Add related products under the same brand
- Expand to new marketplaces (UK, DE, CA, AU)
- Increase MOQ to lower unit cost
- Develop exclusive designs with your supplier
