Garden hoses are a strong seasonal seller in the US and Europe, with demand peaking from spring to summer. But quality varies widely, and a cheap hose can mean high return rates and bad reviews. Here is what to check before ordering.
1. Burst pressure
Burst pressure is the maximum pressure the hose can handle before failing. Look for:
- 400 PSI — basic, suitable for low-pressure use
- 600 PSI — standard for consumer use, most common
- 800 PSI+ — heavy-duty, for commercial or high-pressure use
Always test a sample under pressure before ordering in bulk.
2. Inner core material
- Triple-layer latex — the best. Expands 3x, durable, resists kinks.
- Double-layer latex — cheaper, less durable
- TPE / EVA — lower cost, less flexible
For expandable hoses, triple-layer latex is the standard for quality products.
3. Outer fabric
- 3750D polyester — heavy-duty, resists abrasion and UV
- 2500D polyester — mid-range
- Latex only — no fabric, less durable
Higher D (denier) means stronger fabric. 3750D is the standard for premium hoses.
4. Fittings and connectors
- Solid brass — best. Resists corrosion, lasts for years.
- Plated brass — cheaper, may corrode over time
- Plastic — lowest cost, not recommended for outdoor use
Check the thread size: 3/4 inch is standard in the US and most of Europe.
5. Length options
- 25 ft — small gardens, balconies
- 50 ft — the best seller for home use
- 75 ft — larger gardens
- 100 ft — professional or large properties
Expandable hoses expand to 3x their resting length. A 50 ft hose expands to 150 ft when in use.
6. Accessories to include
- Spray nozzle (8–10 patterns)
- Storage bag or holder
- Extra washers
- Quick-connect fittings
Including accessories increases perceived value and reduces returns.
7. Packaging
- Colour box with product photo and features
- Clear instructions for expansion and storage
- FNSKU label for Amazon FBA
- Warning labels where required
8. Certification
- CE — required for EU
- RoHS — restricts hazardous substances
- REACH — for rubber and textile components
- Prop 65 — required for California
9. Common quality issues to check
- Leaks at the fittings — test under pressure
- Kinks when fully expanded
- Fabric fraying after a few uses
- Fittings corroding quickly
- Colour fading in sunlight
10. What sells best
- 50 ft expandable hose with 10-pattern nozzle — the best seller
- 100 ft expandable hose for larger gardens
- Hose + accessory kits as gift sets
