The EU has introduced new import regulations in recent years that affect anyone selling into the European market. Here is what you need to know for 2026.
1. GPSR — General Product Safety Regulation
In effect since December 2024, GPSR requires:
- A responsible person or entity established in the EU
- Product identification, traceability and safety information
- Reporting of accidents and recalls
- Online marketplaces must verify compliance
If you sell on Amazon EU, you must have an EU-based responsible person. We can help arrange this through our partners.
2. EUDR — EU Deforestation Regulation
Applies to products containing or derived from cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soya and wood. Covers garden hoses, rubber-based products and paper packaging. Requires due diligence and geolocation data.
3. EPR — Extended Producer Responsibility
Applies to electronics, batteries, packaging and textiles. You must register and pay a fee in each EU country you sell into. Some countries require registration before import.
4. CE marking and declaration of conformity
Most electrical and electronic products require CE marking and a formal Declaration of Conformity (DoC). The DoC must be signed by the responsible person in the EU.
5. Energy labelling (ErP)
Applies to fans, heaters, humidifiers, lighting and other energy-using products. The label must be registered in the EPREL database before sale.
6. REACH and RoHS
REACH covers chemical safety, RoHS restricts hazardous substances in electronics. Both require full test reports, not just certificates.
7. WEEE
Applies to electronic and electrical equipment. You must register in each EU country and fund end-of-life recycling.
