Chinese business culture is different from Western culture in subtle but important ways. Understanding these differences helps you build trust with suppliers and get better service.
1. Relationship before transaction
Chinese business is built on guanxi (relationships). A supplier who trusts you will prioritize your order, solve problems faster and give you better prices. This takes time — do not expect the best deal on the first order.
2. Face (mianzi)
"Face" is important in Chinese culture. Public criticism, harsh emails or threatening to leave a bad review cause loss of face and damage the relationship. Always correct problems in private, calmly and with evidence.
3. Communication style
- Chinese communication is often indirect
- "Maybe" or "we will try" often means "no"
- Silence does not always mean agreement
- Yes can mean "I hear you" not "I agree"
Ask specific, closed questions and confirm understanding in writing.
4. Hierarchy and respect
- Age and title matter
- Senior people expect deference
- Do not bypass your contact to go to the boss — it damages trust
5. Time and deadlines
- Chinese suppliers often work on flexible timelines
- Deadlines may be treated as "targets" not commitments
- Confirm dates in writing
- Build in buffer time for your own planning
6. Holidays
Plan around major Chinese holidays:
- Chinese New Year — January or February, 2–4 weeks
- Labour Day — early May, 3–5 days
- National Day — early October, 7 days
Production slows down significantly around these dates. Order well in advance.
7. Negotiation
- Chinese suppliers expect negotiation
- Do not accept the first quote
- But do not push for unrealistically low prices
- Offer something in return — larger volume, longer commitment
8. Practical tips
- Use WeChat for daily communication — it is faster than email
- Reply promptly, even to acknowledge
- Visit the factory if you can — it builds enormous trust
- Send small gifts during Chinese New Year
