Importing from China can seem overwhelming at first. There are new terms, different payment methods and unfamiliar processes. But the basics are straightforward. Here is what every first-time importer needs to know in 2025.

1. Understand what you are buying

Before contacting any supplier, define:

  • Product — exact model, size, colour, function
  • Quantity — start small for your first order
  • Target price — what you need to pay to make a profit
  • Target market — which country will you sell to
  • Certification — CE, RoHS, FCC or others

2. Find suppliers

Three main channels:

  • B2B platforms — Alibaba, Made-in-China, Global Sources
  • Trade shows — Canton Fair, CES, Ambiente
  • Direct search — Google, LinkedIn, industry forums

Get quotes from at least 3–5 suppliers to compare.

3. Verify before you buy

  • Check the business license
  • Request certification and test reports
  • Ask for customer references
  • Order samples before a bulk order

4. Sample and spec

Always approve a physical sample before mass production. This becomes the "golden sample" that defines quality. Keep a copy for both sides.

5. Payment terms

  • Standard — 30% deposit, 70% before shipment
  • Avoid — 100% upfront payment to a new supplier
  • Use — T/T, Alibaba Trade Assurance or L/C

6. Shipping

  • Express — DHL, FedEx, UPS for small orders
  • Air freight — for urgent medium orders
  • Sea freight — for bulk orders, cheapest per unit

7. Common first-time mistakes

  • Ordering too much on the first order
  • Not verifying the supplier properly
  • Ignoring certification requirements
  • Not budgeting for duties and freight
  • Choosing only on price
